[bal'ȓez-], eigentlich Juan de Nịsa, spanischer Maler und Radierer, * Sevilla 4. 5. 1622, ✝ ebenda 15. 10. 1690; letzter bedeutender Meister der barocken Malerei Sevillas, dort ab 1656 nachweisbar. Nach dem Vorbild J. de las Roelas malte er religiöse Szenen voller Bewegung und Leidenschaft, die von Todes- und Vanitasgedanken durchdrungen und bisweilen zu einem extremen Naturalismus gesteigert sind (zwei Wandbilder für das Hospital de la Caridad in Sevilla: »Triumph des Todes« und »Allegorie der Vergänglichkeit«, 1672 vollendet; Letzteres heute in Hartford, Connecticut, Wadsworth Atheneum).
